The Ultimate Guide to E‑Biking Near Yellowstone: Our Favorite Trails, Tips, and What to Ride

Here at InstaGear Outdoor Co., we live and breathe outdoor adventure—and there’s nothing we enjoy more than helping folks experience the beauty of Eastern Idaho on an electric bike. Whether you’re a local looking for new terrain or visiting Yellowstone country for the first time, we’ve got the routes, gear, and know-how to get you rolling.

We’ve put together this guide to share our top four e‑bike-friendly rides in our region, along with tips to help you ride smart, stay safe, and make the most of every mile.

🌄 Ashton–Tetonia Trail

  • Distance: ~29.6 miles one‑way

  • Surface: Gravel and dirt, following a historic railbed

  • E‑Bike Friendly: Yes—Class 1 and 2 allowed

  • Highlights: Stunning Teton views, wooden trestle bridges, open farmland

  • Start Points: Ashton or Tetonia—both have solid trail access

This one’s a classic. If you’re riding with us, chances are we’ve already recommended it. The Ashton–Tetonia Trail delivers some of the most iconic scenery in the region without requiring hardcore fitness. With beautiful views starting from Ashton, it’s a great choice for a half-day or full-day ride. We also offer shuttle service to help you enjoy it one way—just ask when you book!

🌲 Yellowstone–Grand Teton Rail Trail (West Yellowstone to Warm River)

  • Distance: Anywhere from 4.5 miles to 74 miles

  • Surface: Hard-packed gravel and dirt

  • E‑Bike Friendly: You bet—great for Class 1 & 2

  • Highlights: Forest corridors, gentle grades, river crossings, and peaceful vibes

This lesser-known gem connects quiet backroads with nature-filled corridors, tracing part of the old railroad line. We often recommend this ride to guests who want a mix of solitude and scenery—it’s peaceful, shaded, and easy to navigate on a fat-tire or gravel e‑bike. Start at west Yellowstone and make your way toward Warm River Campground, or pair it with a longer ride into Harriman.

🦌 Harriman State Park

  • Distance: Up to 22 miles of interconnected loops

  • Surface: Gravel, dirt, and wide singletrack

  • E‑Bike Friendly: Yes—most loops welcome Class 1 & 2 bikes

  • Highlights: Wildlife, the Henry’s Fork, alpine meadows, interpretive trails

If you’re looking for wildlife and wide-open spaces, Harriman is where it’s at. We love this park because it’s rideable for all experience levels and gives you so many ways to customize your route. You can coast along the River Trail, loop around Silver Lake, or ride up to a ridge for panoramic views. Fat-tire e‑bikes really shine here, especially after a little rain.

🌊 Warm River Campground to Bear Gulch

  • Distance: ~4.5 miles one way (or do the full loop for 10–11 miles)

  • Surface: A mix of pavement and gravel

  • E‑Bike Friendly: Definitely!

  • Highlights: Shaded riverside riding, spring-fed creeks, historic tunnels, quiet canyon walls

This one’s short, sweet, and packed with charm. It’s one of our go-to recommendations for families or first-timers. Ride along the Warm River, enjoy the cool shade on a summer day, and explore the historic Bear Gulch area. Pack a snack or picnic—there are plenty of quiet spots to relax with a view or by the water.

🔧 What Kind of E‑Bike Do You Need?

If you’re not sure which e‑bike is best, we’re happy to walk you through it. Here’s a quick breakdown:

  • Class 1: Pedal-assist only, up to 20 mph—most widely accepted

  • Class 2: Pedal-assist + throttle, up to 20 mph—also trail-friendly

  • Class 3: Pedal-assist only, up to 28 mph—great on pavement, but restricted on most trails

For these routes, we recommend Class 1 or 2 bikes with fat tires. That’s why we rent and sell Mokwheel bikes like the Basalt, Obsidian, and Scoria—they’re rugged, comfortable, and perfect for everything from rail trails to gravel and dirt roads.
